Getting back on Track with our Memories

I am over a year behind on my Family Photobooks.  I have not made it a priority and it’s starting eat away at me.  My toddler is starting to really get into pictures and I don’t want him just looking at pictures on my phone.  So it’s time to really get the books up to date.  I am through 2013 and only have a couple of pages of 2014.  I did however stay up to date enough that I could still get the 3rd edition of the “Jack Book” out to the family for Christmas, but that was the extent of what I got done.

So this week I am tasking myself with doing a page a day.  Hoping that will give me the momentum I need to get me back on track and caught up on our books so that we can all enjoy them.

I also want to make a point every month or couple of months for me and my husband to sit down and enjoy the books too.  They are for all of us not just me or just Jack.

For those that have photo albums, scrapbooks, etc. What do you do to enjoy them?  We all put some much time and effort into them that it seems like a waste to just leave them on the shelf.

Follow me on Faceboook at WarmTidings by the Crafty Organizer to see my progress and other new items coming to the Etsy site and organizing ideas!!!!!

Now it’s time to get those photos organized and ready to go.  Next post…Organizing your photos!!!!

Be back soon!!!

31 Days of Christmas: Day 19 – The Joy of Photo Gifts

Because digital photography is huge it’s no surprise that photo gifts are on the rise.    The hardest part is not finding the picture to use it’s finding the right place to have your photo gifts printed.  In all honesty, go with the least expensive place.  However, make sure you pay attention to the shipping cost and the time it takes to produce your product.   Also, when you are going to get something printed make sure you do your research and don’t use the first website you find.  Everybody is competitive and wants your business but prices can all be very different

Like I said before, you can basically put a photo on anything.  Here are some examples.

Here are some websites to give you ideas for cool photo gifts

Pictures above came from Snapfish, but these are the standard items.  I personally think I have to have the notebook.  I mean come on, look at the name of my blog and well I am a sucker for any type of paper, call it a sickness I guess.

Thanks for stopping by tonight.  Stay tuned for a project tomorrow.

Happy Saturday everybody!!!

Got Summer Pictures? – Here is what you do with them

Summer time is the time of year, next to the holidays, where we take a ton of pictures.  It’s the time of the year for those of us in the mid-west that we aren’t covered from head to toe in snow gear and the picture-taker can actually see our faces.   So because you took a gazillion summer pictures, what are you going to do with them???

In this digital age there is so much you can do with pictures.  Coffee mugs, mouse pads, posters, books, you name it you can make it with pictures.

This first question to anybody that takes a picture is, “What do you do with your pictures?”

GOAL #1: Get the pictures off of your camera/phone and get them organized.

I am pretty good with getting my pics from my camera organized but am bad about my phone.  It’s important to set aside some time to get your pictures organized.  If you do a little bit at a time it will seem like less daunting of a task.

You have to decide what time of photo organizer you are.  Are you a Digital Organizer  or a Printed Organizer?

Printed Organizers

I personally recommend getting your pictures printed wherever it is the cheapest and most convenient for your needs.   Options are Shutterfly, Target, Walgreens, or any other store that has a photo department.  Have the pictures delivered to your home or pick them up in store.

If you do print invest in some good storage boxes and organize by year or occasion, whatever works best for what your goals are.

The one thing that I have to stress to no end is make sure you have an Acid Free box to store your pictures in.  DO NOT get the cheap cardboard like photo boxes.  Because they are not acid free they could harm your photos.  Therefore, they are not appropriate for long-term storage.  However, if you are printing a bunch of photos for a project weekend that is coming up and you just need to transport your prints then okay, use the cheap box.

Here is a great storage container at the Container Store that you can store up to 1,200 photos with each of the 12 cases holding 100 photos each.  Perfect for project based storage.

Digital Organizers

There are a couple of ways or organize your photos on your computer.

I use Memory Manager software from Creative Memories, but using Windows explorer is just as good.  It’s all about getting the photos in a spot or organized in a way that makes sense for what you want to accomplish.

Windows Explorer Example

windows Explorer

Organizing your photos is a very time consuming task, but it can also be the most fun.  Fun??  How can i say this is fun?  Face it you are looking at old pictures, maybe they are a year old or they are 25 years old.  The picture was taken to capture a memory and it’s fun to reminisce about that time when the picture was taken and sharing the story about that time.   It’s fun to go down memory lane and if you organize your photos a little bit at a time you get to visit that fun place more often!!!!

Scrapbooking made easy

As most of you know I am a digital scrapper.  I love having awesome layouts and really cool pages to display my pictures.  However, living in an apartment it’s very difficult to stay organized.  On top of that, finding a good chunk of time to work on it so that I get something done is difficult when there is a toddler running around.  So, almost 10 years ago I turned to digital scrapbooking.  I created my pages with my digital photos and printed them and put them in a binder.  Many many books later I am still at it.  I am little more behind on my projects than I would like to be at this point, but it’s a lot easier to get caught up this way.

In an effort to get caught up I took some time to work on my 2012 book and I thought I would share some layouts that help bring out the best in what I am trying to say.

Telling a story with your page

Baby and his puppy

Sometimes the pictures that you take at a particular time lend themselves to tell a story, not from your point of view but of whomever is in the picture.   I have many books where they are written from the perspective of my son, our dog, or our cat.  🙂

Telling a Story

Story Page

Similar to the other layout.  This one tells a story in order of what happened over the course of about 2 minutes.  Babies are crazy and thank goodness for digital cameras.

Themed Layouts

Theme Page

Creating a themed layout is as easy as incorporating color.  Adding the Italian Flag behind these pictures makes it super easy to figure out that we were at some kind of Italian festival.

No words at all

No words Scrapbook Page

And sometimes the pictures just speak for themselves and you don’t need words or embellishments.    I find myself using layouts like this a lot more mainly because I take a lot of pictures.  But also there isn’t a particular story, it’s just candid shots of my family and having those is what I love about scrapbooking and having pictures to look at.

Thanks for stopping by!!!

Be back soon with more layout ideas!!

Photo Editing with Creative Memories Memory Manager

Happy Easter Everybody,

I know I don’t take perfect pictures every time and some times pieces of one picture are better than others.  There are a lot of photo editing software out there.  Most people have heard of Photoshop.  I had photo shop and while it is really awesome it was really hard to figure out and there were a lot more features in it than I would ever need.

So, for all of my editing needs I use Memory Manager by Creative Memories.   Organize your photos, adjust colors, sharpen, soften, and of course crop.  But, one of my favorite features is the Cloning feature.  Where you can take something from the picture you are working in and get rid of it or take something from another picture and bring it into the picture you want to edit.

Here is an example of cloning that I did with two pictures of my son and dog.    One picture the dog was looking at me but my son was blurry and the other my son was looking at me and the dog was looking away.

Blurry Baby

Combine the two together and there you have it

Another feature that I use all of the time is making the picture black and white but leaving one thing colored.  This can also be done with Memory Manager

Everything made black and white but the lighthouse

Construction Birthday Party

Ok I know baby Jack’s birthday party was a month and a half ago but I finally have pictures of all the decorations.

I didn’t want to break the bank on a first birthday mainly because Jack won’t remember it and really it’s all about getting together and stuff.  So, I made the cake and the decorations and bought what I could for cheap.  We did a construction theme because well he’s a little boy and he has already shown his fondness for all things messy and dirty.  He also was glued to the window while they were doing road construction outside of our apartment.  It also helps that he loves baths so YAY for that one.

Here is what we had

  • Cake
  • Happy Birthday Jack banner
  • Photo Collage

The Cake

Found this on Pinterest and one of my friends has actually already sent it to her sister to re-create it.  Super easy the main cake, which was Jack’s, was a double layer chocolate cake, and the we had cup cakes of various flavors with sprinkles

img_0091_0003

All of the little construction vehicals we bought at Toys R Us in a set for $15 and then that way Jack has a ton of toys that he can play with as well.  Win Win Situation.

Happy Birthday Banner

In keeping with the construction theme I made a road sign Banner

img_0093_0005

Photo Collage

My husband picked out his 13 (one from birth) favorite pictures from each month of Jack’s life and then I added little phrases and what month it was to keep it interesting.  It was a group effort.  It was amazing to see how much he changed in the first year.  Can only imagine what the next year will bring

img_0094_0006

And of course I can’t talk about Jack’s first birthday without sharing a picture of him covered in Chocolate cake
